What Is the Operating Principle of a Vibrating Fork Level Switch?-100 Questions About Tuning Fork Level Switches

11. What Is the Operating Principle of a Vibrating Fork Level Switch?

A vibrating fork level switch (tuning fork level switch) works on the principle of natural vibration frequency change.
Inside the sensor head, a piezoelectric element excites the fork prongs to vibrate continuously at their inherent resonant frequency when the fork is free (not covered by any medium).
When the process material (liquid, powder or granule) covers and submerges the fork, the material dampens the vibration. The vibration frequency and amplitude drop noticeably. The internal electronic circuit detects this frequency shift and immediately triggers an on / off switch signal.
When the medium drops away and the fork becomes exposed again, the vibration returns to its original resonant frequency. The electronics reset the switch state.

Key Points
No moving mechanical parts; vibration comes from piezoelectric drive.
It is a point level sensor, only detecting whether material reaches the fork position, not measuring continuous material height.
Different fork designs adapt to liquids or bulk solids.
Limitation
Heavy build-up or sticky media stuck on the fork can dampen vibration permanently and cause false switching.
