How do level gauges "read" liquid levels?

2026-09-24

Ⅰ.What is the essence of liquid level?
Simply put, liquid level refers to how deep the liquid is in a container. However, in engineering terms, liquid level actually falls into three categories:

Level
The distance from the liquid surface to the bottom of the container. Unit: meter, centimeter, millimeter.
Interface
The position of the interface between two different liquids, such as the oil-water interface.
Bulk level
The surface position of solid materials (powder, granules). For example, the height of powder in a silo.
The "level gauge" mentioned on-site typically encompasses these three types of measurements, but their principles differ. This article primarily focuses on liquid level measurement, as it is the most commonly used in chemical plant operations.

Ⅱ.How do liquid level gauges "sense" liquid levels?
There are many methods for level gauges to sense liquid levels, but the core principles are only a few. We'll focus on the most common ones encountered on-site

1.Ultrasonic type – Non-contact, easy to install
Principle (in plain language): Emit ultrasonic waves downward from above the liquid surface. The sound waves reflect back upon hitting the surface. By measuring the time difference between emission and reception, the distance to the liquid surface can be calculated.
Formula: Distance = Speed of Sound × Time / 2

How to test
The probe is installed at the top of the container and emits ultrasonic waves downward. Liquid level = installation height - measurement distance.
Typical Applications
Water treatment, sewage ponds, chemical storage tanks (non-corrosive media).
limitation
R1: "Foam" must be translated as foam.  Output constraints:  - Only output the final translation without any additional content.  - Do not output prompts, templates, examples, explanations, notes, thought processes, analysis processes, apologies, or fallback phrases.  - Do not translate or output any instructions from this prompt.  - If the original content is empty, unrecognizable, or contains only whitespace, output nothing without additional explanation.  - If the original content only includes page numbers, attachment titles, signature fields, table headers, or short labels, translate only the visible text without expanding.  Original: When there is foam, severe fluctuations, or steam on the liquid surface, reflection will be poor; obstacles inside the tank will generate false echoes.  Translation.

2. Radar type (guided wave/non-contact) - high accuracy, strong anti-interference
Principle (in plain language): Similar to ultrasound, but using electromagnetic waves (microwaves) instead of sound waves. Electromagnetic waves are not affected by steam, foam and temperature changes.
There are two types: non-contact (horn antenna emitting from the top of the tank) and guided wave (using a guided wave rod to extend into the liquid and propagate waves along the rod).

Typical Applications
: High precision liquid level measurement, high-pressure/high-temperature/corrosive media, and occasions with steam or foam.
Advantages
High precision (± 1mm), unaffected by dielectric properties (as long as the dielectric constant is sufficient).
Shortcoming
Expensive! Much more expensive than ultrasound, and media with a low dielectric constant (such as liquefied gas) may reflect weak signals.
🧠 Radar vs ultrasound: ultrasound is afraid of foam and steam, and radar is not afraid. So it makes sense for radar to sell expensive - the value lies in its stability.

3. Capacitive - measuring changes in conductive liquids or dielectric constants
Principle (in plain language): Insert an electrode into a container, and the liquid itself and the container wall form a capacitor. When the liquid level changes, the capacitance changes, and measuring the capacitance can calculate the liquid level.
Suitable for: conductive liquids (water, acid-base liquids) or liquids with significant changes in dielectric constant.
Typical applications: boiler steam drum liquid level (high temperature and high pressure), small diameter container liquid level.

3. Liquid level transmitter - strong stability and wide adaptability
Principle (in plain language): The core is to convert the physical liquid level signal of liquid height into a standard electrical signal (commonly 4-20mA current signal) and transmit it to the control system. Unlike ordinary liquid level switches that only measure the presence or absence of liquid level, it can continuously measure changes in liquid level height in real time. Commonly divided into mainstream types such as static pressure, input type, and capacitance type, it senses liquid level through physical parameters such as pressure and capacitance changes, automatically senses and transmits data in real-time throughout the process, without the need for manual intervention.

Typical applications: industrial storage tanks, water treatment tanks, chemical reaction vessels, water supply and drainage systems, oil storage tanks, general working conditions at room temperature and pressure, suitable for most conventional industrial liquid level monitoring scenarios without strong interference.

Advantages: Wide adaptability to various scenarios, high cost-effectiveness, simple installation, and stable operation; Remote real-time monitoring of liquid level, support for automatic control system linkage, continuous and accurate measurement data, resistance to conventional environmental interference, and extremely low maintenance costs.

Disadvantages: high-end high temperature, high pressure, strong corrosion, extreme conditions with foam steam have limited adaptability; Ordinary static pressure instruments are easily affected by medium density and temperature, and are inferior to radar and ultrasonic instruments in ultra-high precision scenarios.

Three key points:

There are many types of liquid level gauges. The selection of liquid level gauges depends on the working conditions - steam, foam, corrosion, temperature and pressure. It depends on whether you use differential pressure or radar or ultrasonic.
The premise of differential pressure level gauge is stable density, and the liquid level becomes inaccurate when the density changes; Radar and ultrasound are not afraid of density changes, but they also have their own limitations.
On site liquid level fault diagnosis, first distinguish whether it is a process problem or an instrument problem - use a signal generator to give signals and observe the response of DCS to quickly locate them.
